Published in 1927, this novel is one of her most successful and accessible experiments in the stream-of-consciousness style. The novel revolves around various members of the Ramsay family and their visits to summer residence in the Isle of Skye in Scotland, between 1910 and 1920. It recalls childhood emotions and highlights adult relationships. A central motif of the novel is the conflict between the feminine and masculine principles at work in the universe.
