The Grass Is Singing

The Grass Is Singing 10.0
The novel takes place in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), in southern Africa, during the 1940s and deals with the racial politics between whites and blacks in that country (which was then a British Colony). It follows an emotionally immature woman's hasty marriage to an unsuccessful farmer, and her ensuing mental deterioration, her murder, and the colonial British society's reactions to it. The novel created a sensation when it was first published and became an instant success in Europe and the United States.

This is one of those novels which were urging to be read for many years. The title “The Grass Is Singing” emotionally appealed to me a lot. I was picturing the wide field full of dry grass dancing in the evening and to this date, that image keeps me amused. The novel was entirely different than what I have imagined, yet the reason for its calling made sense when I found myself so much invested in the protagonist Mary Turner. It is a finely written, subtly woven murder mystery with a rich literary treatment.
