With earnings of 445 Crore worldwide, the film emerged as a commercial success and mixed reception with praise for Khan's performance, background, visual effects and criticism for the story, screenplay, direction and highly cliched elements. It emerged as the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2015 and one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films. Indian media outlets reported that the core plot of the film takes an inspiration from the 2012 South Korean film Masquerade, which was loosely based on the 1894 novel The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope.
