Piku was released on 8 May 2015. The film is loosely based on the 1980 Bengali-language short film, Pikoo by Satyajit Ray. It garnered widespread critical acclaim upon release. Critics praised the screenplay, performances, humour and overall simplicity. It also emerged as a commercial success worldwide. Made on a budget of ₹42 crore (equivalent to ₹54 crore or US$7.1 million in 2020), Piku earned ₹141 crore (equivalent to ₹181 crore or US$24 million in 2020) worldwide.
