Piku (Deepika Padukone) is an independent, intelligent, short tempered woman with liberated thoughts. She lives in Delhi with her widowed father, Bhaskor Banerjee who is in his early 70s. Bhaskor da (Amitabh Bachchan) is an old grumpy man who is troubled by the problem of constipation. Irritated by the difficult bowel issues, Bhaskor da is always discussing, conversing, examining it not only with Piku but with every single person he meets. Midst the family chaos, there is Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan) who is the owner of Himachal Cab Company. His company provides cab service to Banerjee family.
The plot executes how Piku manages the home and office while taking complete responsibility of her cantankerous yet adorable father. Their life story moves forward unless one day when Bhaskor da collapses due to over drinking at a relative's party. It is when the old stubborn father decides to visit to his childhood place Calcutta and yes, by road! As no driver is ready to drive the annoying father-daughter Jodi to another city, Rana decides to take the charge. During the journey, Rana and Piku get to know each other quite well. This quirky tale which is so inclined to motion is an emotional journey depicting the real and everyday facts of a father-daughter duo.
