The film was released theatrically in India on 9 January 2020, coinciding with Thai Pongal. Although met with mixed reviews upon release, the film grossed ₹250 crore (US$33 million) crore at the box office, making it one of Rajinikanth's highest-grossing films and the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2020. However, it was considered a poor performer, which caused distributors to threaten hunger strikes, demanding that Rajinikanth recoup their losses.
