It is based on 1959 Indian court case - K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra. Rustom collected approximately ₹141.1 million on its opening day. The film collected ₹500 million in its opening weekend and ₹909 million in its first week in India. At the 64th National Film Awards, Akshay Kumar received the National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the titular character.
