The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival winning two awards. Since its release in 2015, the film has gone on to achieve cult status. The film contains various examples of Urdu & Hindi poetry at different junctures including works by Akbar Allahabadi, Basheer Badr, Brij Narayan Chakbast, Mirza Ghalib, Uday Prakash and Dushyant Kumar.
