The film was widely screened across the United Kingdom and North America, and was also selected for screening at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews. It won Filmfare Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Female Playback Singer. Star Plus launched an extended miniseries version of the film, split into five episodes from 28 May 2002 to 25 June 2002.
