The film won widespread critical acclaim and had a number of prominent screenings. It was a box-office success and received a "blockbuster" rating by the website Box Office India after grossing over ₹1.270 billion worldwide. It was the recipient of a number of awards, including 4 National Film Awards. The film popularised the term Gandhigiri. Vidhu Vinod Chopra submitted the film as an independent entry for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It was later remade in Telugu as Shankar Dada Zindabad (2007)
